Middle Earth Festival began in May 1998 with a small event called “Fun at the Mill”. Twenty years on and we now welcome thousands of visitors each year from all over the world.

The event is a celebration of the life and work of fantasy author J R R Tolkien whose grew up near the festival site. The activities and events on offer at Middle Earth Festival include not only based on Tolkien’s books, but on the things from which he took his inspiration. So you’re just as likely to see a reenactment of a viking battle or a demonstration of medieval craftsmanship as you are to attend a talk on how to write in Elvish, a craft workshop for children on how to make toy dragons or a stall offering Lord of the Rings themed face paint and mehndi.

The festival is planned and run entirely by volunteers and is funded almost entirely though donations. If you would like to be involved in planning the festival or to volunteer your services as a steward during the weekend, please get in touch.
